LANSING – State Representative Robert Jones (D-Kalamazoo), Chair of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC), today hosted a free health fair at the Mount Zion Baptist Church in Kalamazoo. The community event offered residents free health screenings and informational sessions to help improve their physical and economic health.
"It's important that our residents have access to the information they need to live healthy lives," Jones said. "That includes not only keeping their body healthy, but maintaining a responsible financial lifestyle. I'm glad this health fair was able to get this helpful information to the residents in our community who need it the most."
The event offered free health screenings and informational breakout sessions on a variety of topics, including information on living a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise, managing your finances, starting a business and how to do business with the state. Attendees also received free information on topics such as mental health, depression, substance abuse, cholesterol, diabetes and where to get tested for HIV and AIDS.
Representatives from the Western Michigan University College of Health and Human Services also were on hand to offer information for residents interested in pursuing a career as a health professional.
"My top priority as a lawmaker is the well-being of our residents," Jones said. "It's vital that our residents know the importance of eating well, exercising and regular doctor visits, but especially in these tough economic times, our residents need to make sure their finances are in order as well. By taking care of our residents, we can take care of our communities and build a stronger Kalamazoo."
